Scherezade has been involved in the Arts for as long as she can remember. Her drawings are her memories. These drawings are visual interpretations of her surroundings, for example, sounds and movements of daily life.
As a very young child, she showed great promise as an artist, so her parents enrolled her in Art school. She was fortunate to study under two very special and talented painters, Don Elias Delgado and Nidia Serra.
Scherezade, born in the Dominican Republic (Oct 1966) has lived in New York since arrived to study in 1986 to attend Parsons School of Design with a full scholarship based on the quality of her portfolio. Her work frequently evokes memories of faraway home and the hopes and dreams that accompany planting roots in a new land. Garcia’s work is included in the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, Washington DC, El Museo del Barrio in NYC, The Housatonic Museum of Art in CT,and El Museo de Arte Moderno in Santo Domingo, DR. Her solo exhibitions include “Paradise redefined” at Lehman College Art Gallery, Bronx, NY; Island of many Gods at the Salena Gallery, and “Theories of Freedom” @ The Humanities Art Gallery in Long Island University, Brooklyn, NY. Her work was included in the Caribbean Biennial in Santo Domingo, DR in 2001 and The Havana Biennial in 2000 in Havana, Cuba, also she is a founding member of DYPG (Dominican-York Projecto Grafico. Scherezade Garcia received her AAS from Altos de Chavon School of Design, La Romana, DR, her BFA from Parsons School of Design, NY, NY and received her MFA from The City College of New York, NYC 2010.
Scherezade lives with her husband, NYC photographer William Vazquez, and her two budding artist daughters, Gabrielle and Montserrat in Brooklyn, NY, where she also has her studio.
