+ ARTIST BIO

Recio, Raúl

Born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (1965)

“Dominican contemporary art also picks up on themes that just weren’t in the air 40 years ago. The impressive installation of 26 woodblock prints by Raul Recio uses a craft-based populist political format for a hallucinatory autobiographical narrative that blends African-Christian myth with the often harsh realities — poverty, crime, AIDS — of immigrant life in New York.”

- Holland, Cotter, New York Times

“Raúl had been producing, for a long time, a universe so faithful to reality that it was frightening. In that hell, Raúl was, and still is, my master. (…) Annoying, vulgar and hypersensitive “The Stubborn One”, as his friends call him behind his back, possesses a talent for showmanship inside and outside his work. In 2001 Raúl starts to crystallize a project that would unite two realities. The artist and his craft, like Clark Kent and Superman, would stop being two to become one. That is how “La Salsa” is born, a Caribbean superhero; half collector, half baseball player, a sort of elegiac, the African deity of chance and uncertainty, the messenger of the gods that Christians insist on calling Satan.”

- Rita Indiana, Vice Magazine
